Conversions to Islam
The majority of Muslims on Crete owed their origin to conversion of the local population to Islam during the Cretan War (1645-1669). Beyond the prospect of exemption from the special taxes imposed on Christians (the haraç and the poll tax), basic motivations were the gains from participating in war and the expectation of joining the Muslim elite. A second, unquantifiable wave of conversions occurred in the late 18th century.
